actually, i can't remember if red hat 9 comes with alsa out of the box or not... see if you have any alsa packages:

rpm -qa | grep alsa
if you have, well, to run
alsaconf just type that command into a terminal as the root user... to become root use the "su" command...
but if you don't have alsa then you'll need to load the appropriate oss modules for your sound chip... you should be able to see what chip you have by doing a:

/sbin/lspci | grep audio
maybe post the output of that if you want...
BTW, you should really consider using a more modern, maintained distro... like maybe mandriva or suse or something... just a thought...
