I'd say it is actually uncommon, except if you run many VMs (which is more typical of servers) or you like to brag to others about the size of your RAM stick.

It's not about bragging, its about planning your system to suit the purpose. Some people have systems that have many VMs, do video work, and an array of other tasks that having that much RAM allows you to do what you want to do much easier than if you only had 2 or 4 GB. In other words people don't have to have that much but they may want it because it will make things easier for them in the long run.

Exactly. As it. Is I initially built my system with 16GB of RAM then found my CPU heatsink was causing the RAM to not be seated correctly and had to replace it. Since I use VMs a lot I thought I might as well spend a little more money and get 32GB -- I think it was on offer at the time I bought it.
