Different distro, different video playback quality
SMplayer in my Salix Xfce 14.1 plays HD 1080p video much better than Xubuntu 14.04.1's does. Same SMplayer settings, same open source Radeon driver (my machine is Acer Aspire One 522 netbook). Doing upgrade of some xorg* packages didn't help, nor using proprietary fglrx driver from Ubuntu repo. Xubuntu's VLC plays with same bad quality.
What may cause the different?
Performance may depend on Kernel version, libdrm version, mesa3D version, smplayer version, vdpau(used for video acceleration) (vaapi) library version, audio/video codec library versions, xorg-driver versions (some may use Xv others glamor), Xorg server version and general cpu/vectors optimization while building.

My Salix and Xubuntu both have quite same kernel version, while I'm not sure about other softwares you name, I'll have a check. I find many software versions in Salix/Slackware repo are more outdate than in Ubuntu repo though, CMIIW. Kernel 3.14.x used in my Salix are downloaded ones directly from Slackware repo websites, not from Salix repo, but runs fine.
EDIT: so you mean, latest version of those softwares will help increasing playback quality?
