Compaq Presario V3000 Distro Choice

Hi all,
First, I understand that there are similar threads to this on these forums / on the internet. It's just that there are a few things that aren't addressed there that I need to know.

We have a new Compaq Presario V3000 (look below for specs) that I'm trying to get linux on (With xp dualboot), but being my mom's computer, I need a distro that will be easy to use (ie. not slack or gentoo) and that won't require major hacks to work.

Right now, I'm running a Kubuntu 6.06LTS 64 bit livecd... and most things work except for the Broadcom build in wifi card, the widescreen support (it needs the nvidia drivers - easy to get on a normal install, so not really an issue), and it detects the partitions on the hard drive, but cannot see any files inside of them.

Would there be any distros which would work out of the box or without major configurations on this machine?

Thanks in advance for any help

I would recommend PclinuxOS. I have it running on three laptops, two of which have broadcom wireless. Pclos has an easy to use gui for ndiswrapper to get broadcom windows drivers installed.

Nvidia drivers are available via synaptic.

I've had a good experience with openSUSE 10.2 on my compaq v6120us from Circuit City. I also had to download nVidia drivers for 3d (Widescreen worked "out of box") and ndiswrapper for wireless, but that was actually simpler than it sounded when I started. I have to admitt that this is the first time for me using linux. I tried Fedora Core 6 and it wouldn't work. Also tried Ubuntu and PClinuxOS, as a matter of taste, I just like Suse better-it seemed to flow (?) or work better for me. Nothing scientific, just opinion.

Edit: I would have probably given PClinuxOS a longer try if the screen resolution (1280x800)had worked correctly on the live cd/install.

Thanks for the replies, PCLinuxOS didn't cross my mind and I had some past negative experiences with SuSE, so I guess I will try them. Thanks!
