Bug, and a question, re: ACPI

I am running mandrake 10 community on an eMachines 5312.

When the system is powered up on battery power, I get about an hour and a half of battery life. If the machine is connected to AC and then disconnected, I get well over two hours. It seems that there is some low-power mode that is not engaged unless the AC adapter is disconnected while the system is running; only then does it realize that it needs to conserve power since it is running on batteries.

1) Is this due to a BIOS issue with ACPI support or something in the Mandrake implementation?

2) Is there some way to switch the system manually to "battery mode"?
