best processor for linux laptop for development

I use my latop for development work and need to replace it.
I need a laptop with 80G disk and 1gig memory but as
generic as possible and to last a few years.

So what processor should I be looking for ?

Also - if I go with SXGA will I get issues with lower resolutions ?
(so is it sensible to say look for one with a 1024x768 LCD ?)

amd 64's might be best for compiling on a desktop, but i dunno how well the mobile coutnerparts compare.

for overall laptop experience, i'd be hard pressed to try anything other than a new dothan (pentium-m with 2 mb cache)
