Best Linux flavor to install on Lenovo S10-3 notebook
Hi All,
I'm new to this forum, played around with Ubuntu many years ago but never got anywhere with it.
I now want to install some flavor of Linux on an OLD Lenovo S10-3 notebook. All I want to do with it is use a word processor like Open Office or similar, that will save documents in .DOC or .DOCX format. That's it! If it will connect to the Internet without a lot of bother, that would be a bonus.
I tried to install LUBUNTU 18.04, it succeeded but the word processor is ABIWORK or something like that, and it won't save documents as .doc or .docx - only saves in its Abiwork format.
If there is a better option in choosing a different flavor, or if there is an EASY way to make the ABIWORK save as .doc, please let me know.
This is a small and slow computer, but it will be adequate for word-processing. If Lubuntu is working well, just replace Abiword with LibreOffice. Look in the menu for the software installation tool, remove Abiword and install LibreOffice. That has the ability to create both .doc and .docx formats: just choose the "save as" option in the File menu.
But if you did want a different distro, the question is whether you have the basic model with 1 GB or have upgraded to 2 GB? If you only have 1 GB, I'd suggest AntiX; if you have 2 GB, try MX Linux. Both come with LibreOffice as standard. Personally, I'd stick with Lubuntu if you're happy with it.
Lenovo S10-3 is an underpowered netbook to run any decent recent OS. Its got only one slot for RAM and can accept max 2 MB, so discarded the 1MB and installed a new 2MB stick. Next, I replaced the HDD with SDD. Finally, installed Linux Mint 19 Cinnamon with LibreOffice. This setup is working fine, albeit slow.
As you have prior experience with Ubuntu, I suggest going with Lubuntu. It uses the LXDE desktop environment and offers a breezy performance and a familiar look.
