ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 M10 on Ubuntu

Using Ubuntu 6.10 XOrg & Nautilus

I've been trying to get the fglrx driver to take control over mesa for about 5 hours... I've come closest with this:

http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubu...r_both_Methods

also tried this process...

http://wiki.serios.net/wiki/Ubuntu_A...%27s_installer
and this
http://wiki.serios.net/wiki/Ubuntu_A...on_through_APT
and this
http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/l...ux-firegl.html

atleast, the ATI control panel will now come up...

I couldn't really care about which driver is used because I'm not a big laptop gamer (Dell XPS), but I would like to be able to use 1280x1024 atleast...

I've added fglrx to modules and tried every suggestion under the sun... compiling from source, installing using ATI's installer (that was about the least useful of any attempts) ... I'm going nuts!

I'm a Newb to linux, but I have a serious clue, I mean, really, in about 5 minutes I figured out how to use vi to recover from setting the wrong Device name in the xorg.conf file, so I'm not asking to have someone just give me the right answer and then do it for me... I want to know why this fails and how to fix it!

If you need something else added to the below listed file let me know... thx in advance,

D.

heres my xorg.conf:

# /etc/X11/xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the /etc/X11/xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man /etc/X11/xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

For anyone checking this post for answers:

I decided after filling my first install with so much junk that I finally bodged it up beyond repair that I would try kubuntu instead... I like KDE a bit more... seems a tad more mature than GNOME/Nautilus. I then stumbled upon this page:
http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubu...allation_Guide

Which worked flawlessly the first time out...

Thanks for anyone who may have considered helping but didn't get there (yet) ...

Thank you much for your effort

I would like to thank you for posting your own reply with the fix.

And you are right, it worked great.

I didn't even know this laptop had a ati card built in until I started to google it, and I came straight here to your post.

Again, thanx again.
