APM problems

I know these things are all related to APM, but I can't figure out how to get them fixed:
- No icon in the toolbar
- No Suspend or Standby options
- Computer goes thru shutdown procedure to the words "Power Down" and stops. I have to hit the power button to turn it off physically.

I've tried looking this up on here and in half a dozen HOWTO manuals, but can't find the answer.

I've tried typing "modprobe apm" as root and it seems to work, but then it doesn't re-load at start-up. Have to do it again. Also, the control center doesn't have full functionality - no power control and no toolbar icon.

Running kernel 2.4.29.

Thanks all!

right click on the panel and add the battery thingy to get that icon

edit /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.4 and add a line that says "apm".

reboot.

I looked under the /etc folder and don't show a folder named modules.autoload.d. I have a file named modules.conf, but that file is blank.

Is it different if it's (a) Slackware or (b) under the master boot record (MBR)?

Thanks, again!

Please, any help would be greatly appreciated. "modprobe apm" tends to work well, but temporarily. Correcting what I wrote earlier. Suspend works like it should and my PC seems to shut down properly (no 'power down' message and wait). But when I restart, it's gone. How can I make it permanent?
