Unhappy 2.6.28 Kernel, Speedstep not working, P III laptop overheating

Hi,

I have an old laptop here (Twinhead Pentium III 1133Mhz) which regularly overheats on Jaunty/Ubuntu 9.04. While looking into the issue, it turns out that CPU throttling is not working. I realize that this in itself should not cause overheating, but it sure doesn't help things...

I compiled a kernel without the CPU frequency setting modules, making them externally loadable .ko modules. When trying to load the modules using modprobe, none of them will load.
'modprobe acpi-cpufreq' yields 'No such device', as do the older deprecated speedstep-<x> modules.

There's nothing in the Kernel ring buffer (dmesg) other than a reassuring "ACPI: Processor [CPU0] (supports 8 throttling states)", no errors. I did spot "weird, boot CPU (#0) not listedby the BIOS", but that shouldn't really impact things, should it?

I also tried to 'repair' my DSDT using acpidump, etc, yielding a new cleaned up DSDT. Using this DSDT however made the "ACPI: Processor [CPU0] (supports 8 throttling states)" line disappear completely!

I tried different kernel options (this machines needs 'lapic' for best results, but I also tried noapic, noacpi, processor.nocst=1, nosmp, etc.)

I'm really lost! Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!

Ivo

This thread rings a few bells for me.

The dsdt is very probably ok. I "traced" problems to the dsdt only to find it was acpi configuration issues on the kernel. I would suggest grabbing the acpi section out of a distro kernel as a lazy way of sorting yourself out. Use the original dsdt. Install acpitools, and then at least you'll know what's going on. This laptop is 64 bit; you are welcome to my acpi settings if they are any use. (I'm on 2.6.29.1). 2.6.30 apparently has some bug - an exploit to do with bad code being optimised badly.

Also read the config help. There's 4 options for the frequency scaler and not all of them may work on your cpu. In particular the 'ondemand' requires rapid frewuency changing capability in the cpu. They don't all have that capability.
