do you know if the laptop has a user/password ? what distro is it ?

try command : "startx" as user if you have one.

if you bought that lappy and it is booting to root, you need to add user to it.

Either your computer was configured to automatically login as root or it was put in hibernate or suspend mode while currently logged in as root.

The computer appears to be running in terminal mode and you should be able to run commands. Post the output of the command

uname -a
