wierd error with 2.6.21

I just compiled the 2.6.21 kernel and when I run /sbin/lilo, I get
Code:
root@graceland:/boot/kernels# /sbin/lilo
/proc/misc: No entry for device-mapper found
Is device-mapper driver missing from kernel?
Failure to communicate with kernel device-mapper driver.
/proc/misc: No entry for device-mapper found
Is device-mapper driver missing from kernel?
Failure to communicate with kernel device-mapper driver.
Incompatible libdevmapper 1.02.09 (2006-08-15)(compat) and kernel driver
I have never seen this before. Can anyone shed some light as to why or what the error means? I'm using LILO version 22.8. I'm not using LVM (I was reading some stuff that lead me to think that that is what it's mainly for), and I don't have libdevmapper installed as a package. Maybe it is something in the kernel?

It seems to be a problem with the running kernel (i.e., the one running when you run lilo).
