Why is beginning of GDB session unknown like "0x000000000000fff0 in ?? ()"?

Code:
Reading symbols from vmlinux...
(gdb) target remote :1234
Remote debugging using :1234
0x000000000000fff0 in ?? ()
(gdb) hb start_kernel
Hardware assisted breakpoint 1 at 0xffffffff814438c7: file init/main.c, line 486.
(gdb) c
Continuing.

Breakpoint 1, start_kernel () at init/main.c:486
486		set_task_stack_end_magic(&init_task);
(gdb) c
Continuing.
When referencing other people do this exact thing, I see results like:

Code:
0x000000000000fff0 in cpu_hw_events ()
Why?

looks like duplicate of this: https://www.linuxquestions.org/quest...ed-4175716727/
yes, you need to set debug mode, there are options in menuconfig to set it.
