Unhappy What is does the kernel name mean?

Hi,

I installed mandriva 2006 on two computers one a 6 year
old beast and the other brand spanking new one. On my
old machine everything works and the uname -r gives

Old machine: 2.6.12-12mdk

New machine: 2.6.12-12mdk-i586-up-1GB

What is the difference? I am trying to get ndiswrapper to
work and the only differce I can see is this. I had to
recompile it and it works great with the old machine but
not the new one!

I am using the same install CDs

The difference in the kernel versions depends on the processor type and configuration. For example, the i586-up-1GB is compiled for an older Pentium class system with a single cpu. The other kernel you mentioned is the default kernel for newer single proc systems with P6 architecture (Pentium Pro, Pentium II/III/4, Core Duo, AMD Athlon, etc).

There should only be one kernel-source rpm package. It's on the installation cd. The key to compiling modules for different kernels is the file /boot/kernel.h, which mandriva updates at boot time based on the currently running kernel.
