Unpacking initrmfs troubles. How to solve?

The booting stops with the message of
-------------8<--------------
Unpacking initrmfs...<0>Kernel panic - not syncing: no cpio magic
-------------8<--------------

How to correct such a situation?

The Kernel version is 2.6.18.1 (last stable). The Linux is installed from Slackware 11 disk with original Kernel version of 2.4.3.33.

Kernel installation was done by a short script:
-------------8<--------------
#!/bin/bash
KERNEL=2.6.18.1
cd /boot
cp -f /usr/src/linux-$KERNEL/arch/i386/boot/bzImage ./bzImage$KERNEL
mkinitrd -c -k $KERNEL -o /boot/initrd$KERNEL.gz -s /boot/initrd-tree$KERNEL/ -m reiserfs
lilo
-------------8<--------------

The lilo.conf section on this kernel looks like:
-------------8<--------------
image = /boot/bzImage2.6.18.1
initrd = /boot/initrd2.6.18.1.gz
root = /dev/hda4
label = Linux02061801
read-only
-------------8<--------------

Thanks advance
