Unable to load wacom driver module after compiling for a 2.6.14.4 kernel

hi. i just compiled the wacom driver and everything seemd to go fine. Im following the howto on the wacom linuxproject page and it says to do rmmod wacom but when i do that it says:

ERROR: Module wacom does not exist in /proc/modules

the next step in the howto is to try insmod wacom. Quite obviously that would not work. The howto states this:

If you get errors inserting the module, then you may need to reconfigure and build with module versioning disabled. If it loads without a hitch, move on to the next part.

Do they mean reconfigure and build the kernel or the driver?

sorry looks like doing make install after compiling put the driver in the wrong location so i copied it manually to /lib/modules/kernelversion and i can modprobe it and it shows up with lsmod.
