ok i have slackware 10.2 i just updated my kernel from 2.4.31 to 2.6.16.16 my old kernel still works fine but when i try and boot my new kernel it just gives me a blank screen. it dosnt do anything. any help would be greatly appreciated
yes i can make it to and past the lilo boot screen i have 3 boot options Windows Xp Slackware 2.4.31 and Slackware 2.6.16.16 when i click on the new kernel linux it does its preliminary load and checks the bios then the screen just goes blank. i let it just sit to see if something would eventually come up but it never does. And i believe i have my video up to speed i use and Nvidia mx 4000 series graphics card and i just went and installed the latest driver for it so i really dont know what the problem is
i checked in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf and it said it should work i even changed it from what anotehr post siad might work but it still isnot fucntioning and i do believe i selected the option for video mode selection support how do i check it or must i reinstall the entire kernel?
to check it you can just go back to your kernel source dir and run
make menuconfig
a quick check would be to remove the video mode selection support and recompile and see if it works. if it does then you should read up on what you have to set in lilo.conf to make it work for your system.. there is an option 'vga' in lilo.conf that you can set to a specific resolution and depth, or you can specify 'ask' and lilo will prompt you to choose a mode when you boot.. `man lilo.conf` to see more about that option
as for the xorg.conf, it should not be the problem because X is not a part of the initial boot process..
no, you don't have to reinstall the entire kernel, but it can help. i would save it for last choice.
did you say that changing the date in xorg.conf wasn't helpful? well, you can search for the line "My Screen", and change it, or you can search for section "display" and change the depth and modes to be compatible with your screen.
