root folder full

hi I've just instlled ubuntu on my new netbook eee pc 1025C. the official kernel has no support for the intel atom but i finally found a solution and install a newer kernel that does have support but after downloading stuff now my root folder seems to be full.
eudemonis@ubuntu:~$ df -h
df: `/root/.gvfs': Permission denied
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/loop0 17G 17G 147M 100% /
udev 488M 4.0K 488M 1% /dev
tmpfs 198M 816K 198M 1% /run
none 5.0M 0 5.0M 0% /run/lock
none 495M 156K 495M 1% /run/shm
/dev/sda3 184G 18G 166G 10% /host

I think it has to do with /var/log files

udemonis@ubuntu:/var/log$ ls -lS

Am I right? and if so what's causing the problem and is it safe to remove these files?

thanks for any help and please be explicit with answers including commands I'm not so skilled with it ;-)

Those files are rather small, I would rather check your home-folder for files that use up the space.
