Kernel Panic: No Init Found Try Passing Init= Opt

My Debian boxing running software raid 1 refused to boot after a clean shutdown and would only display the motherboard splash screen. I reset the bios and now after the grub splash screen it says loading kernel then the I get the above error. I'm going to download Knoppix livecd to help with troubleshooting, please could anyone advise of what I need to check etc.

Add init=/sbin/init to the Grub boot command.

Depending on the init system installed, there should be a script, binary, or symlink named /sbin/init.

I tried deleting 'single' and putting in init=/sbin/init

Code:
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.26-2-686 root=/dev/md0 ro init=/sbin/init
I also tried init=/bin/bash buy that failed as well

this is the output I got.

Obviously, the file system is seriously damaged now on that computer.
