kernel compile - ide-scsi.o not created


hi i am trying to compile my kernel but i am hitting this error.

can anyone determine what i am doing wrong:

[schneidz@hyper linux-2.6.23.1]$ sudo make install

[schneidz@hyper linux-2.6.23.1]$ ll /lib/modules/2.6.23.1/kernel/drivers/scsi/

i am following this guide:
http://superb-east.dl.sourceforge.ne.../README_26.txt

and i am on step 13.

also when i reboot with the new kernel the monitor fades to black (suspend) before it gives the log in screen...
