Devices list generation?


How is the global list of known devices generated?

There are three systems that perform different parts of this task. The traditional devfs manages devices that show up in the /dev directory such as disks, tapes, modems, and sound cards. The hotplug and coldplug systems perform dynamic device detection. I believe that they are considered part of the devfs system so I didn't include them in the count (three systems) mentioned in the first line.

Syscntrl manages devices that don't show up in the /dev directory such as network cards.

Lately the udev system has taken over the devfs and syscntrl systems' functions.
