Config_build_salt:

The build ID is used to link binaries and their debug info. Setting
this option will use the value in the calculation of the build id.
This is mostly useful for distributions which want to ensure the
build is unique between builds. It's safe to leave the default.
appeared in 4.19. What does SALT mean?

In the context of a kernel, I have not a clue. In the context of cryptography, it is a value added prior to hashing so the resulting hash is unique.

It looks like this is an effort to create a unique build ID, which is then necessary for debugging (although I don't grasp the deeper meaning). You can set the salt to your own value to guarantee uniqueness each time you build the kernel.

The corresponding patch with two paragraphs of explanation seems to be https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/10510481/.

I thought of that, but also thought it was perhaps an acronym. There's nothing in the kernel docs.
