Can I use a dmraid (fakeraid) drive as / without an initrd

I use a custom kernel and don't want to build an initrd. Is there any way to use the fake raid volume directly as root by specifying root=/dev/mapper/sil_xxxxxxx

as the kernel boot parameter? I tried it, but that device didn't exist until the dmraid userspace program is run. Is there parameter to pass to the kernel to tell it to automatically configure dmraid?
