boot up/shut dowm messages missing

In PCLinuxOS minime , I upgraded the kernel using synaptic to 2.6.16.18.
After rebooting , the screen has some coloured streaks with no boot up messages rolling by. Same is the case while shutting down also. But the window managers load correctly and working is as usual ok.

What happens when you switch to the console (Ctrl-Alt-F[123456])? What happens if you boot into text-only mode (runlevel 3)? Maybe the framebuffer is not configured correctly. Maybe you need to recompile one of you graphics drivers.

I will check it up.
Meanwhile, the commands "make menuconfig" or "make xconfig" do not work.
why?

You tell us. Give us the error reported by the Makefile script (or better yet, the entire output of the script).
