xfree86 Server 4.x.x

This may not be the forum to ask this question and I apoligize in advance if is not.

If I am underrstanding the Xfree86 Documentation correctly they basically have re-written the Xfree86 Server. Not a proble

Here is my problem. With the Xfree86 3.x.x my trident 3DImage975 video adaptor worked great with the proper configuration in the XF86Config file.

With the 4.x.x my card does not work even with the same configuration. What I mean by does not work is that I cxan't get 32 bpp color depth, I can how ever achieve my 1024x768 screen resolution.

Has anyone else experienced this problem?

I have this problem with Slackware 8.1 and FreeBSD 4.7 and I would imagine any other *NIX type OS that has Xfree86 4.x.x

TIA

There's a big difference between XFree version 3.x and 4.x. The part "near the card" changed (acceleration support added etc). That's why the drivers are different for the new version. Some cards are supported better, some not.

There was a big problem with the Trident cards throughout the earlier 4.x.x series, a lot, and I mean a lot of Trident cards got better support with the brand spankin' new release 4.2.1 Here's the Xfree stink on it:

http://www.xfree86.org/4.2.1/Status33.html#33

I had a Cyberblade that I could never get to work until 4.2.1, maybe you'll do better upgrading.

Cheers,
