XF86Config or xorg.conf.

As part of another ongoing post I am trying to setup my LG flatscreen monitor - As an associated theme, I am wondering what is the difference between the two config files :

/etc/X11/XF86Config and /etc/X11/xorg.conf -

Are these files used in different contexts? Do I need both?

I run a simple desktop deb4 machine with internet access and a printer.

Current version of Debian should be using xorg.conf since it is running xorg.

XF86Config is old and deprecated in Debian, it should no longer be necessary. I doubt you would have, or even be able to have, both xorg and XFree86 installed at the same time since they perform the same function.

Xorg and Xfree86 are both implementation of the X window system. most distributions switched to Xorg from Xfree86 due to some licensing issue a few years back..

Dear all - thanks for your help - i got it working using your adjustments to xorg.conf - I had made a mistake with the identifier for the graphics device. Although it now works the screen image appears part way along the left hand side of the screen. I have used the monitor controls to shift the image back left as far as they will let me, but I still have about 1 inch of black unused space on the LHS of the screen. Anything further I can do to adjust this please?

Verify the Refresh rates in the config file are correct for the monitor you are using. Check the monitor manual or manufacturers website.
