Question XEV reports duplicate keycodes for multimedia keys

I am having trouble setting up my multi-media keyboards keys. The problem is while the kernel keycodes are all unique for all the keys, xev reports several fo the keys as duplicated. Is there anyway to modify X keycodes?

Google didn't help much--apparently this is either weird or a unique case. 7
