Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Question XEV reports duplicate keycodes for multimedia keys

I am having trouble setting up my multi-media keyboards keys. The problem is while the kernel keycodes are all unique for all the keys, xev reports several fo the keys as duplicated. Is there anyway to modify X keycodes?

Code:
xev
162 play
144 previous
153 next
164 stop
146 eject
234 mail
164 messenger
144 Q
153 WWW
161 Search
200 lightbulb
178 shop
232 print
233 rocket
160 mute
174 volume down
176 volume up

showkeys
164 play
165 previous
163 next
166 stop
154 eject
158 mail
166 messenger
165 Q
163 WWW
140 search
146 light bulb
150 shop
128 print
159 rocket
114 volume down
113 mute
115 volume up
142 sleep
Google didn't help much--apparently this is either weird or a unique case.
