When is Striping Hard Drives OK?

the subject might seem like an interesting question at first but let me explain. What I'm wanting to know is if when you go to do a stripe set in Linux should you always have the exact same drives? Not just size but model and speed? And if you using different drives which have different speeds but the same size will that ruin them?

thanks
marshall
