Not all printers are listed there, but series should work if listed.
That link is out of date, I bought an hp officejet 6500 all-in-one about six months ago and it is not listed. The best place to go is Source Forge and the page that has the latest hplip driver will list all supported models.

hp is usually good with keeping the drivers updated.

No I am not an original hp man, used to use Canons when with windows but converted to hp when I changed.

The sheet feeder is built into the hinged lid, so it can be used "the old fashioned way" too for scanning books (though as with most home/small office scanners you would probably struggle a little with Encyclopaedia Brittanica).

About HPLIP

This hplip software:
-- is it something I will HAVE TO download?
-- is it likely to be on the Ubuntu 10.4 distro disk and how do I get at it?
-- is it likely to bhave been already installed from when I loaded Ubuntu 10.4?
-- is it something that can operate stand alone (as in scanning an image to a jpg file) or is it something that is used by other applications (e.g. Open Office, Gimp, etc.) or both?

After looking at those lists I see what you guys mean about the HP and Linux software support situation!

It's almost a certainty that it won't be pre-installed, but it should be available in the normal repositories. You may have to install a later version from sourceforge if your printer isn't supported on the repository version, but this is less likely.

For scanning it will use sane/xsane which will let you scan directly to jpg, png, pdf etc.

10.04, not 10.4. Hplip is in the 10.04 repos-

http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid/hplip

Roken is right, it will be an older version in the 10.04 repos, some newer printers might not be supported.

HPLIP is available in Ubuntu and many other distros, because it contains the drivers needed by HP printers, which comprises I would say the majority of printers Linux users might have.

You can use sane or xsane to scan images in various formats.

If you have a new model you might have to update but it is no trouble because most of the popular distros are included with the use of the automatic installer.

Not for Slackware. I'm still learning how to install with it, and I haven't figured this one out yet. I need to update to the new hplip, but I'm not sure how. Anyone have any leads or suggestions? Like I said, I'm new to all of this. I can move around with mc or terminal with no problems. It's when I go to update things that I fall short in the knowledge department.

@lilithd: routine maintenance on Slackware is done by un-commenting one mirror in /etc/slackpkg/mirrors then running slackpkg update followed by slackpkg upgrade-all
