I am building my own media centre, which I hope will use Linux (either Debian or Suse distros). I wanted the most advanced DVD RW/RW+ possible, aware that there might be a shortage of drivers for the newer products from unhelpful distributors. What device do you recommend and where can I find the drivers? (PS - I am a relative newbie to Linux, imagine that this project will test my mettle!)
Go with a nice cheap Lite-On. I have found their performance to be excellent, compatibility far better than the Pioneer drives I used to buy, and the reliability is far better than the likes of Ricoh.
Have not heard of Lite-On. My friend recommends a NEC. The most important qualities to me are i) quietness, & ii) Maximum writing capacity. Speed is of secondary importance, as I will probably slow it down anyway to reduce noise.
