What does compatibility refer

Hi folks,

LaCie Network Space 2
http://www.productwiki.com/lacie-network-space-2/

On specification
# Compatibility (Windows): XP, Vista, 7
# Compatibility (Mac): OS X 10.4, 10.5, 10.6

What does it refer to above? Can the said NAS serving PCs on both Windows and Linux systems. TIA

It is probably referring to software that comes with the NAS to allow windows and mac to connect easily to the device. You shouldn't have any problem mounting it in Linux though.

Hi bret381,

Thanks for your advice.

Windows run on FAT16/FAT32 and Linux on ext3/ext4. If the device is formated at FAT32 then all Linux files stored on it will lose owner and group (permission). If the device is formated on ext3/ext4 can Windows file be copied on it without problem? Thanks

Samba can allow Windows to see the drive as a network drive and copy files to it. However Windows does not natively recognise ext3/4 filesystems

File sharing across platforms will NOT be considered here. This is ONLY a transition. Finally all PCs will run Linux.

Now Windows users will share files amongst themselves and same as Linux users. That is what I need the device for. My concerned is if the device is running FAT32 the Linux files on it recopied back to Linux PC is there any problem? Or only losing permission? Thanks

yes, you will only lose the permissions from the files.
