Webcam and Skype

Distro Mandriva 2009.0 I got the webcam to work with Skype however if I close the Control Panel Skype closes down.

LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/liv4/v42convert.so skype

CORRECTION THIS WORKS EVERY TIME WITH THE NEW SKYPE FOR LINUX WHATEVER KERNEL.

In the console type the following, and leave the console minimized while you are using the computer.
LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype

makes skype open and the camera works OK QuickCam 8.4.8.

If I close the control panel then Skype will close. Opening Skype through Applications webcam picture flashes green.

Regarding Skype Sound. I had to disable Pulse Sound and let Skype automatically use ALSA. Skype then picks up on the sound card. The latest Skype is supposed to work fine with PULSE but with me no go only ALSA.

It seems the module or driver for your web cam is not stable. Test the web cam in mplayer. If it does not reliably capture, then buy a web cam that works or that is known to work.

I have a similar problem. I am running 2.6.27.21-170.2.56.fc10.i686 on my Sony Vaio laptop with a ID 093a:2460 Pixart Imaging, Inc. Q-TEC WEBCAM 100 camera. The webcam works just fine with the application 'cheese' and I have a clear video. A couple weeks ago I got the camera to work in the Skype Control Panel video devices tab by preloading the same library you did, but now that won't even work. When I press test to try the webcam, skype crashes. Let me know if you find a solution to your problem, as it may be very similar to mine.

I also tried what I originally wrote and found that sometimes it didn't work. The correction does work, why? I don't know.
