Want to merge partitions, but they are not adjacent

I just want to confirm that I can't merge two partitions. I have:

/dev/sda1 ext3 waswindows 250GB
/dev/sda2 ext3 /boot
/dev/sda3 extended
--/dev/sda5 linux-swap
--/dev/sda6 ext3 / 200GB (current Ubuntu install)

Using a Ubuntu LiveCD and GParted I unmounted the Windows partition (sda1), deleted it, and formatted as ext3. I would love to just absorb the waswindows 250GB into the sda6 200GB for one 450GB partition. But, I can't do that since they are not adjacent, right?

Is my only option to re-install the whole system if I don't want those to remain separate partitions?

Thanks,
Rob

leave the partitions as they are, but just join them up using LVM. that way you can aggregate the space really easily.

Hi, you can not physically merge them, but Linux supports LVM. Thus enabling you to have the system map 2 or more partitions into one volume (they don't even have to be on the same disk). Here and here are relatively good reads on that subject.
