It simply means having a small pipe inside a larger pipe.

Hi,

suppose you have 3 PC for the administration office and 3 PC for technical office: you tipically want to connect to the network the 3 PC of the administration office and the three PC of the technical office, but do not want that technicians connected to the administration office and vice versa.

So you need 2 separate switch and to installa 2 physycally separated local networks.

If you use 1 switch and virtual LAN (VLAN), you create 2 VLAN, ADMINISTRATICE and TECH, and connect the PC accordingly.

The 2 LAN are logically separated. the PCs in the 2 VLAN cannot communicate, and you spend less money (and you can change the configuration when you want!)

bye

A bad ASCII visual representation for explanation

Code:
ISP----Modem----Switch--------VLAN 1 (192.168.100.0)--------Admin computers
                         |
                         -----VLAN 2 (192.168.3.0)---------Tech computers

VS.

ISP----Modem---Physical ETH0----Switch LAN 1 (192.168.100.0)-----Admin Computers
            |
            ---Physical ETH1----Switch LAN 2 (192.168.3.0)-----Tech computers
In example one we have a switch that supports VLAN which allows us one physical switch, we assign specific ports say 1-5 are on VLAN 1 which is 192.168.100.0 subnet then we assign ports 6-10 to VLAN 2 which are on 192.168.3.0 subnet. Then VLAN 1 computers cannot talk to VLan 2 computers unless we place a router between the two subnets. We might do that if we wanted http access between the LANS but nothing else.

In example two we do not have a VLAN capable switch, this requires us to have two seperate switches. One for LAN 1 and one for LAN 2.

VLAN technology is nothing more than Virtualization of switches. Allowing for increased ROI by minimizing the hardware requirements yu need to purchase for your needs.
