Just as an added 'how-to' for this thread, I discovered a fool-proof method for installing Epson printers in Linux years ago.
When you download your driver, make sure you download both the
specific model,
and the 'generic' one (the ESC-PR one).
Install these first. If installing scanner drivers, make sure you also download the 'data' package, too; the scanner driver won't install without it.
In the CUPS web interface, install your printer using the 'generic' driver
first. Run a test page off.
Hit the 'Printers' tab, and click on your printer. Then, click the 'Administration' drop-down, and select 'Modify'. Follow this through, but this time, use the specific driver for your model.
99 times out of 100, this works.
