Using devices after loading the module

Hi Guys,

I have a question about how to configure and use devices after loading the driver module without rebooting.

For example; you install a PCI NIC, you compile, install and insert the module but then what do you do to get it to work as eth0,1,2 etc?

On red hat I've run kudzu and on suse I've used Yast and both tools are excellent but what do you do if you have neither of these tools at hand?

I installed a NIC in my Gentoo box and I had to reboot before the nic was configured as eth1 which is ok but defeats the purpose of being able to load a driver module on a production box in a live environment (if you were forced to).

I've tried manually creating the ethX config file making sure the contents reflect the correct info but it hasn't worked for me.

Thanks
Justin

Hey,

After building the module, use modprobe to install it, for example on my system...

modprobe tg3

ifconfig then will show a device without an IP.

dhcpcd eth0

ifconfig then shows my configured device with an IP.

Try it and let me know how you get on.
