usb wireless problem with Azio AWU254

Uses the ralink rt73usb chipset. I had this device working with mandriva 2008.1. I installed mandriva 2009.1 but couldn't get the driver to work. Re-installed mandriva 2008.1 and now it loads the rt73usb module and has every indication that the device is working but it doesn't detect any wireless networks - even one in the same room. Works fine on winxp.
Anybody have any luck getting this one to work right.

The ralink rt73 is well supported in the kernel since about 2.6.26.
You need its firmware installed in /lib/firmware (or built into the kernel).

Code:

ifconfig -a

will list wlan0 if all is well.

In Gentoo, I have had problems with the Transmitter being set to off.
You can use

iwconfig wlan0 txpower 30dBm

to set it to something reasonable.

Look in

Code:

dmesg

to check for errors and

Code:

iwconfig wlan0

for the current settings.
