Unhappy USB Modem problems!

Hi all,

Well, I can't live without my linux (or should that be TuxRacer!!), but I also can't live without the Interent, and I'm having some problems connecting...

I am running Mandrake 8.0, I have an external USB modem (Conexant HCF V90 Data Fax RTAD USB Modem) - I just can't seem to connect. Under Windows it is on COM2, so on Linux would this be /dev/ttyS1 or /dev/ttyUSB1?

Then again, I still have no idea what to do. There do not seem to be (m)any MAN pages or HOWTO's that deal with USB modems, so I do not know what the problem is.

When I use ttyS1 I get 'Modem is busy' and when I use ttyUSB1 I get 'Modem is not responding' (I think that's what i got for the ttyUSB1 anyway!).

Help!!!

Cheers,
Lloyd

hi, hi...make sure everything in the kernel with the HID option is compiled into the kernel...other than that check the linmodems site and if that still don't work....I strongly suggest getting an External serial modem which is compatible with Linux. USB is just a pain in the butt and a head egg all at the same time...usb is a curse

USB modems have to be ACM compliant in order to work in linux, the ones that are not are just winmodems wrapped in plastic with a usb cable. Have a look at /usr/src/linux/Documentation/usb/acm.txt for more info.
