Question Problem w/ usb modem

Hi. I' m very new to the world of linux/unix but i like it a lot. I was wondering: i installed RH 8.0 and managed to get my cable modem (usb wired) working via GNOME (off course) but since then i get the following message when i log in:

Could not look up internet address for x1-6-00-90-96-15-94-39. This will prevent GNOME from operating correctly. It may be possible to correct the problem by adding x1-6-00-90-96-15-94-39 to the file /etc/hosts

what does it mean and is there any other way to correct this than adding x1-6-00-90-96-15-94-39 to the file /etc/hosts??

Thanks
