UPS configuration issue

I have a CyberPower 825AVR I am trying to set up on my Mandriva 2007 x86_64 server. My /etc/ups/ups.conf looks like this:
[CyberPower825AVR]
driver = cyberpower
port = /dev/ttyS0
desc = "Mandriva UPS"

but when I execute $ cyberpower -a CyberPower825AVR
I get:
Network UPS Tools - CyberPower driver 1.00 (2.0.1)
Giving up on hardware detection after 3 tries
Unable to get initial hardware info string

same thing if I do $ cyberpower /dev/ttyS0

and if I do $ upscmd -l CyberPower825AVR@localhost -u admin -p ******
I get "Error: Driver not connected"

Any ideas?

I've always found Linux UPS software provided by the manufacturer (APC and CyberPower in my experiences) to be poorly written, buggy, and system resource hogs.
So I wrote my own, you're welcome to try mine instead.

Compile it by "sh ups.c" after you D/L the three source files.
Email me if you have questions.
