Unable to shut down mandrake 9.2

I have win xp running besides mandrake 9.2. I am unable to shut down mandrake 9.2. The system will hang at the last statement, "Shutting down system". If I turned off the system manually, it will boot up again after approx. 5 min. Does anybody experience this phenomenon?

Yes. Try opening /etc/lilo.conf in a text editor and deleting "acpi=off" or whatever the option it is that they pass to the kernel at boot time to turn off acpi.

Changing the login manager shouldn't fix it... not unless the command it's set to pass is nerfed...

Mandrake is known for crappy power management support (I had a similar problem in 8.2).

It's an ACPI problem.

From a console, pass the command;
halt

or, if that doesn't work;

shutdown -h now

and report what happens.

Sigh, still didn't work after using the above command. Also unable to surf the net using my wireless usb linksys v2.6. Looks like linux still has a long way to go for newbies like us
