I'm just getting pissy with linux right now. To be honest, I'm thinking of getting rid of it for a second time. I really dont see the point if nothing on my computer can be recognized...
I guess you just have to be some uber leet h4x0r to use this OS. My soundcard wont work, I cant mount my drives to get media from discs, and playing videos wont work. Despite the best troubleshooting on this forum, none of it works.
This is going to be my last attempt to stick with this OS before I totally ditch it. The information I have on these discs are PDF ebooks that will hopefully teach me how to use linux better. I find it ironic I cant even get to them.
So, does anyone have any clue why I cant get to the information stored on these discs?
What I did:
Inserted Disc
Click Computer
Clicked CD-ROM/DVD-ROM Drive
Error: Unable to mount media.
There is probably no media in the drive.
I don't suppose you have a spare drive you could drop in and test? Did it work prior to installing linux? Try the disk in a machine other than the one you wrote with btw, since I've had problems with "soft" burning before (and that was nothing to do with OS)
from what you've described above i could find that you're better off with some operating system like windows. i hope you'll find everything that you want in that os. linux is meant for explorers, who never give up on failures.

best of luck, bye...
Mod note: jineshkj - this sort of attitude really isn't helpful. As the LQ Rules clearly state, "do not post if you have nothing constructive" to say.
As for the soundcard issue, most likely either the necessary kernel module hasn't been loaded automatically by FC5, or perhaps the volume levels are muted (which often is the default). Please post details about your card (make, model). Alternatively, and before ditching Linux, you might want to try a couple of other distros to see if they are more compatible with your needs/preferences. Good luck with it
have you patched your kernel with the nfts patch from www.linux-ntfs.org yet?
that seems to be the only thing i got right so far hahaha im slow
and i've installed fedora core 5 for 2weeks now
Ok. Here were my soundcard issues I tried to have resolved on the other forums.

No problem -- Can you just post the output of these commands:

Thanks!

There we go -- Totem-xine, the package required for media playback isn't installed. You can either re-do the howto to get it installed, or I'll give you a shorter version of it here:
Code:
[root@cpe-24-195-24-133 ~]# rpm -Uhv w32codec-1.0_20050412-12.at.i386.rpm

Im guessing I need libstdc++.so.5

You can remove the volume control from the panel by right-clicking the speaker icon on the panel and selecting "Remove From Panel" from the menu.
Thats the error I get at the top right of my screen when I click on the speaker icon. Aside from that, totem loads, so does the other player for music but it still wont play the files. Any clue? Or maybe it will and I just cant hear them yet.
it seems that either (as the message says) gstreamer wasn't installed with your Fedora installation or your soundcard isn't working that well... Do other sounds play? Either way, let's see if your soundcard is detected:
Code:
su - yum install system-config-soundcard system-config-soundcard
If you turn on your speakers and click "Play test sound" do you hear anything?
Next, let's make sure Gstreamer is working OK:
Code:
My current state. I got the volume icon to work at the top right and I can actually play media files and toggle the volume. I just can't hear anything. I have a ViewSonic with speakers built in and a wire that goes straight to the soundcard, and I even tried some older altec lansings.
