Question UART : Unknown

hi there,
i've been trying hard to configure my modem. i've compaq laptop and an internal modem with Conexant chipset.
i set I/O and IRQ with setserial command and rerun it to display the same.
it shows I/O and IRQ but says UART:Unknown
how do i find out UART and how to let driver know about it?

+

it's an HSF series (software) modem.
so do i need to download a driver for that?
or the problem is with UART only and i should get that right first?

i m pretty confused at the moment.
I'll be greatfull if anybody can help me out of this.
thanx for reading,
ciao.

I have no experience with Linux on laptops but since I am soon to attempt it I ran accross this site in my preinstall searches.
Good Luck.
