[SOLVED] Problems installing drivers for NVIDIA

Can't get my graphics driver working ( Nvidia Geforce 7300 GS ). Stays on max 800*600 resolution:/
Tried enabling hardware but get an error message saying that it can't find card and monitor when I restart. Tried using synaptic manager and installing from there but no luck there either.

Completely new to linux and using Ubuntu

Ubuntu.

Which version. You will have to install the restricted driver and reboot.

nvidia-settings

Get an error message when I try
Quote:
You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run 'nvidia-xconfig as root), and restart the X server.
Don't understand a bit of that error msg. Am I missing part of the install or something?

check /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Check you /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and make sure the driver is 'nvidia'. If thats correct I would try un-installing and re-installing the driver. Or sudo nvidia-xconfig or 'su - root' enter password then nvidia-xconfig.

Had the same problem before. The best thing to do is to connect to Internet, update list of packages, THEN install the restricted drivers (instead of installing as soon as the system installs).

It would help others if you rename the title of your post and include [resolved] in it
