I have a U.S. Robotics 56K Voice PCI modem. I cant seem to get it to work. It does show up when I run lspci but it doesnt get connected to any of the comm ports. I am using Slackware 9.1 and have just recently upgraded to the 2.6.5 kernel so I probably forgot some kind of module. It worked just fine with the kernel that slackware 9.1 came with. I have also made sure that ppp_generic and ppp_async where both loaded but still nothing.

I tried using setserial on ttyS0-ttyS4 with the right irq and port and all i got back was no such device. I even did MAKEDEV on all of them but the same thing still happened.

Here is what is returned by dmesg and lspci -vv. Could the problem be with devfs? I think i read somewhere that devfs became a standard when the 2.6.x series came out. Does it put the modem on a different device that i dont have?

it might be a winmodem. if it is, youre gonna have a hell of a time to get it to work... maybe doing searches around here:

I dont think it is because it worked before with the standard Slackware 9.1 (before i updated my kernel) but i will give it a try anyway. I have a U.S. Robotics 56K Voice PCI. Can anyone tell me if this is a winmodem.

Make sure you included serial support in the kernel properly.

I do have 8250/16550 and compatible serial support compiled as a module but when i go modprobe serial it tells me that it cant find the module. When i build it into the kernel I still have the same problems. Is there something else that I am missing?

I have come to the conclusion that my modem is not a serial modem but a internal one. I read somewhere that it isnt a winmodem though. I guess it was getting attached to one of my serial ports with my old kernel. What does this exactly?

I did forget a module. As soon as I loaded module 8250_pci everything work fine almost. I can connect but cant go anywhere but this is a software problem so i will ask in that forum.

Hi there...I have the same modem you do and Im having the same problems. I read all your post but I dont know you got 8250 module number from. Is that the only module you added into your kernel? If not, can you state the rest and show me how you got it? This is greatly appreicated. I have been at this for days.
