Trouble with booting Mandrake

Hi,

This is a problem I never encounter before, I installed Mandrake many times and it has always been a cool and smooth experience. I have this one comp, it has a Duron 1600 integrated CPU on the board, I have a 30Gb HDD, 1Gb DDR and Windows XP is loaded on the machine.

I have a small SCSI card with a 10Gb HDD on it for additional space - non bootable board and a firewire card installed on the board.

I installed 9.1, for some reasons the install was really slow, very unusual, after the install, it would not reboot, as if the boot sector was not located. I reinstalled it again and same thing. I tried a Mandrake 7.0 (original purchased CDs) and when I rebooted it toasted the Windows XP boot sector and I could no longer boot XP. I repaired the boot loader with the rescue command and I still could not get Lilo to give me the choice of systems to boot.

I repaired the XP loader and this is fine, i can still load XP. However I want to install Mandrake 9.1. on the machine.

Maybe I have some non compatible hardware, I can always retry and take everything out, maybe it does not like the DDR sticks I am using? Are there issues with that?

But, I would not think it would affect the booting.

Cheers!

What exactly happens when you try and reboot? Does it just hang on a blank screen? Or do you get to see the LILO text? What video card are you using?

You might try just just booting into a text mode from the rescue/install disk and checking the syslog for more info. Barring that, you might try taking out the firewire card, firewire support under Linux is still experimental, so that could be causing problems, but I don't see why it would cause the computer to not boot at all.

Hi, sorry for delay - I was getting a blank screen, nothing whatsoever - anyways, I took it all apart, as I used some parts for an other system, and when I rebuild it, it was no problems, most likely was a material sit, not a software problem. Tks

Type linux 3 at the boot loader. This will boot into console. It could be that Mandrake didn't detect your monitor correctly or you skip the step to configure your monitor and video card.

I think XConfigurator or something similar will help you setup your monitor and video card properly. If it ask you "do you want to test", say yes. If you see pretty colors then it works. You can then type startx but do not run startx as root or su (super user). It should go into a desktop manager that you choose during setup.

It may not like the 1GB of memory. Mandrake 9.1 has a bug up its but about 1GB of mem or more.

Check the errata page on Mandrake website.

Later

tks much - makes sense on the memory situation - as I re-install on an other system with no problems with the video - just with the sound!! Which I am working on

cheers!
