I have just purchased an external Iomega Zip650 CDRW which connects by a USB port.


cdrecord -scanbus returns the following:

I added the following line to my fstab:
/dev/scd0 /media/cdrw udf,iso9660 rw,noauto,users,exec,dev,suid 0 0

When I type mount /dev/scd0, I get the following:
mount: block device /dev/scd0 is write-protected, mounting read-only

How do I get it to consider the drive writeable?

The drive doesn't need to be mounted read-write in order to be burned to. You might not even want it mounted. To burn, use something like cdrecord or XCDRoast.

You do not mount a CD to burn and a blank CD can not be mounted because there isn't any filesystem i.e data.

AFAIK packet writing aka DirectCD or InCD for linux is still in the experimental stage. linux can read DirectCD formated CDRWs which is what the udf is for in fstab.
