I've been messing around with a weird chineese 'capture card only'..and what I've found to work is making sure you have the usbtv module loading on your system.

This may not solve all of your problems, but it will at least get qv4l2 to get you a video showing.

The sound (matching with video) seems to always be the main problem with these 'capture cards'. I am still struggling to move vhs tapes to dvd. I think a proper TV card might help.. but the issue seems to be software related, more than hardware. I am trying to use tvtime or whatever, to recognize my sound card properly (even tho the sound is already working on all other aspects of my sys.)

The open artist live cd has the usbtv module load correctly, even in the live mode. however in live mode, not much of the listed software in the menus is actually installed... sooo.. you have to either install the software (temporally), or just install the whole distro in order to experiment alittle more.

I gave up on finding a solution for this card, bought a used Hauppauge HD PVR and have not regretted it.

'mplayer /dev/video0' and I'm watching 1080i component from the STB, using up to date Arch Linux with no fuss. MythTV is setup and working (but not as far as getting the satellite channel listings) but I don't use it since I prefer to control the STB directly. There is a little perceptible lag changing channels compared to when the STB was connected to a TV but it's not bad enough to make me want to do the Hauppauge remote/IR blaster config. I'm used to the STB's remote.
