Thinkpad T42 screen blanking

I have a thinkpad T42 which for some reason,the screen keeps going off.All the hardware:motherboard,display cards,circuitry have been tested and found OK.The screen usually goes off whe I'm running someting thsat is graphics intensive,but that's not usually constant.It can go off when I'm just reading a PDF for example.It's only the screen that goes off,the HD is usually running at that time.
This is not a powersaving feature as I have confirmed on the software.Any ideas as to what I should do,or what the problem could be?

The first question to ask is, Does the blanking consistently occur after a particular length of time?

another: what do you do to get it working again? reboot?, wait?, hit it repeatedly?
if you have a dual boot settup, does it do the same thing in the other OS ?
you say power management is turned off, is it turned off in the os and in the bios?
try booting with a knoppix disk ( knoppix is great

) and see if it still does the same thing
