HI all,
I am new to this community and i would like to ask for somehelp..
I have HP proliant ML370 Generation 4 with HP smart array 642 controller. The operating system i am using is oracle unbreakable linux. i asked the system admin to connect the TAPE for me and he did it, now i only have a problem of installing the driver for the tape so that i can do my database backup. the tape model is HP DAT 72 Internal Tape Drive.
I recommend starting at the link here. It's the first one google returned, and appears to be a full featured HP website detailing Linux drivers for various distros, and associated stuff about HP products and Linux
thank u for ur replay, but what i need is not the driver, i am getting a problem in the detection of the hardware in the system, i can not put any drivers until the hardware is detected.
That is not *always* the case. Can you try to install the drivers first, and then look for the hardware? The driver may be key to identifying the installed hardware. Examples are Serial devices and some PCI modems.
Is that a PCI device or what? What does it connect by?

thanks alot for ur help till now... but if u can give me the steps to install the hardware driver then i would appreciate it, it is an internal tape and it is not a USB tape.. also
when i run the command #lsmod it shows me ST but in /media, i found no tape detected
Hmm.. Does the driver package contain a README file, or other instructions of some sort?? There must be.. Without having the driver here myself, and having no idea what 'Oracle Unbreakable Linux' is, it's pretty hard for me to suggest how to go about installing the driver.
To be **VERY** general, you usually need to extract the driver files from an archive, then compile some stuff, and then 'install' the driver's parts to the system.
I'm quite certain there would be *some* related instructions on the HP site I gave above as well.
You might also check the HCL (look on top of this page) and see if any other user has given information on using that tape-drive with Linux.
Remember---- Google has the answer you need, 99.8% of the time

OK, I am a bit confused here. In POST #5 you say you need help installing the driver. Now in POST #7, you say 'there is not much instruction on how to download the driver.'
I'm not sure what exactly you need help with. However! After spending about 3 minutes browsing the website for which I gave you the link above, I located this page: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport...ctID=c00057819
... which is the Installation/Troubleshooting page for people having issues with TAPE DRIVES such as yours and HP server systems. Included on that website are numerous links from which you can obtain a variety of drivers for Linux on HP servers.
So, if you can take the time to check that site out, and determine specifically what we can help you accomplish, we'll be more than happy to help. But you first must identify the driver you need, download it, and read the instructions. I haven't got a HP server with a tape drive running Oracle Linux, here in my livingroom, so for now the best I can do is direct you to the official Help-Page, and later on try to help you interpret the instructions and error messages you are having trouble with.
